Dear Helaine and Joe:I have an old set of wrought-iron garden furniture (a magnet sticks to it, so it must be iron). The set consists of a four-footed heavy pedestal table and four chairs, all with a lot of cutout decorations that I think could be roses. I could find no bolts or screws holding it together. Do you think my set could be roses? What is the age and value today?Thank you so much.J.L., Naples, Fla.Dear J.L.:The White House Rose Garden is a well-known feature of the presidential mansion, but it was there long before President John F. Kennedy and his family lived there.It is our understanding that until just after the turn of the 20th century, the part of the White House complex that now houses the Oval Office, Cabinet Room and Rose Garden was occupied by stables for both horses and coaches and had a conservatory for roses. In 1902, when the stables and conservatory came down,Chanel bags, Edith Roosevelt, President Theodore Roosevelt锟絪 wife, insisted that a proper colonial-style garden be installed to replace the rose conservatory.In 1913, Ellen Wilson, the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson, replaced the colonial-style garden with a rose garden. President Franklin D. Roosevelt commissioned Frederick Law Olmstead Jr. to redesign the Rose Garden in 1935, and one source says that it was at that time that the cast-iron furniture was installed but another source maintains that the wrought-iron pieces were part of the original Ellen Wilson design.In 1961, Jacqueline Kennedy had Rachel 锟紹unny锟?Lambert Mellon redesign the Rose Garden with a more defined central lawn and French-style flowerbeds. The Rose Garden is approximately 125 feet long and 60 feet wide, and balances the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden,chaneloutletroses, which is on the east side of the White House.The only photograph we could find of the wrought-iron furniture in the Rose Garden maintains that the pattern was patented in Great Britain in 1846 and in the United States in 1848. But by the 1850s many foundries in the United States were casting similar items.The wrought-iron White House Rose Garden pieces we found were rococo revival with scrolls and leaves with a repetitive arch pattern in a style reminiscent of gothic revival on the back. The wrought-iron pieces belonging to J.L. do not resemble these in the slightest, and appear to be just standard-quality pieces from the third quarter of the 20th century.The fact that a magnet sticks to them is a good sign because so much of the garden furniture we see these days is made from aluminum, which will not attract a magnet. We cannot tell whether the flowers on J.L.锟絪 furniture are roses because the white paint that has been slathered on the items at one time or another obscures the details.What we can tell for sure is that this patio set has absolutely nothing to do with the White House Rose Garden, and is just a nice table and four chairs that would have made spring and summertime al fresco dining a pleasant experience during the mid- to late 20th century.This set is probably worth $175 to $250.Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of 锟絇rice It Yourself锟?(HarperResource, $19.95).
