My proposal to address some of Watsonville's needs for jobs and tax revenue is modest. Measure T would allow the city to annex 80 acres of land next to Highway 1 that is already surrounded on three sides by urban development. This is less than one-half of one percent of the farmland in Santa Cruz County. Approximately 100 farmworker jobs could be replaced by 3,000 retail and office jobs. Currently the city receives no property tax or sales tax from this property. By developing this land, the city would receive multi-million dollars of sales, property and hotel tax.
