Inside Scoop SF Three kinds of common and outrageous restaurant scams
Somewhere out there who knows where there are people cooking up all sorts of scams to run through a restaurant. This extends far beyond the old dine-and-dash routine, as it seems that people have developed more outrageous stories in order to separate restaurants from hard-earned sales. I thought for the readers it might be a good idea to run through the top contenders for outrageous scams.
The ploy: Every so often we will get a letter regarding a dry cleaning bill from a guest that dined in the restaurant and had wine or food spilled on them. No big deal right? You run 5,000 people through a restaurant a month; you are bound to have spilled on one of them. Normally not an unusual occurrence, but there are scammers that run a city, county or nationwide wide scam of contacting restaurants with bogus claims of dry cleaning work for which they should be reimbursed.
The best case scenario is that when there is actually a spill, the restaurant manager on duty hands the guest their business card with the date on it at the time of the accident. Unfortunately the guest doesn't always get a business card so there is no real way to verify the credibility of the complaint. So restaurants may think issuing a check to the guest is the best course of action. Normally the bill is just under $50 and you don't even think about the expense vivienne westwood.
How to counter the scam: Fortunately scammers have a tendency not to do their homework on the location. Restaurants can deduce the validity of the problem by tracking the guest phone number and asking specific questions about their service and food hermes scarf. Ask for the date of the experience and then more specific questions. This could help in establishing the validity of the claim.
The ploy: A number of different phone services are required by law to provide what is called a TTI operator for the hearing and speech impaired. This allows the user to send a message to the TTI operator using a keyboard hermes belt. The scammer uses the TTI operator to try to place an order for a large amount of food. Restaurants are automatically accommodating since the person on the other end is believed to be physically impaired tiffany blue nikes. Naturally the promise of a large catering order of 150 chicken Caesar salads or 150 steak dinners is a big incentive to buy into the scam. The order is placed and paid for with a stolen credit card number, or a bogus check is sent within 24 hours of the order chan luu.
The usual back story is the person is planning a catered event at their home in the coming two weeks, either for a funeral or birthday. The scammers run the check through a non-existent bank account and it can take up to three to four weeks before you receive the check back as no account on record.
As part of the order the guest requests that you add transportation costs to the credit card or the check, in order to pay the driver that will be delivering the food (this is done to drive up the price and eventual refund).
Two days before the event you receive a phone call back from the scammer through the TTI operator requesting cancellation of the large order and a refund. Box. In both cases the scammer first credit card or check will clear initially but then be rejected later when the banks see that they were paid for with stolen information. This could take months. Guess who loses on this one? That's right: the restaurant.
are just stepping out for a smoke ploy: The old dine-and-dash scam has become a more sophisticated rouse as restaurants cater to a larger, more experienced diner base. The old plan was easy to spot right away the dasher would have one foot out the door and one at the table vanessa bruno. Nervous, twitchy vanessa bruno, and obviously not a dime to their name.
The new wrinkle in this scam is to do the complete opposite of dining and dashing. It's more like dining, lingering and then fading away tiffany blue nikes. Rather than blending into the woodwork and ordering the basics, a well dressed couple will come in calling attention to their dress and demeanor. Only ordering the finest of everything and making themselves the center of attention. Rather than slithering away unnoticed as quickly as possible, these grafters linger through to dessert ordering after-dinner liquors, cognacs or port. They then ask the wait person to bring their coats so they can step outside chan luu, prior to the dessert being delivered, for a smoke tresor paris. The wait person, eager to score a big tip, not only helps the would-be diners with their coats but then offers matches or a lighter to the scammers as they head for the door. Once outside, they blend into the night scene never to be heard from again.
How to counter: As is always the case, there are people always trying to pull a fast one lululemon sale. The best advice I can give is to be vigilant and do your homework. Things that don't seem right in your radar of experience probably aren't beats by dre. Trust your gut casque beats.
