Watching news on Pakistani television is never a treat. It is always filled with disasters which have almost seized to affect us, as we all have become immune to the circumstances. However, even after all of our desensitization, some stories still have a way of piercing through our hearts in such a way that it's hard to forget them
vivienne westwood. One such story is that of Captain Usman (Shaheed), who married 2 years ago and was father to a beautiful 3 month old daughter. Captain Usman was among the 24 soldiers who embraced the sacrifice of martyrdom in the line of duty on November 26, 2011
vanessa bruno. With Noor Jahan's famous song"ay puttar hattan te nahi wikde"playing in the background, if this story can move a person sitting millions of miles away from their country without even being related to the soldier, I can't even imagine what horrible pain his immediate family must be going through.
The story of the incident starts with accusations.
First of all,Afghan officials on Sunday claimed their forces had called in an air strike after coming under attack from the Pakistani side of the border.
On the other hand,According to Pakistani officials the 40 or so soldiers stationed at the outposts were asleep at the time of the attack

In the words of Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas: attack was unprovoked and indiscriminate, there was no reason for it. Map references of all our border posts have been passed to NATO a number of times.
After the attacks, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO Secretary General, said the attack was and deplorable Pakistan's Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar also issued a statement saying that such acts are unacceptable
victoria secret outlet. They demonstrate complete disregard for international law and human life, and are in stark violation of Pakistani sovereignty
To show their discontent, Pakistani government has given the US fifteen days to vacate Shamsi air base and has also closed the route which is used by NATO to carry supplies to its troops in Afghanistan. It is estimated that 49 percent of NATO's supplies are transferred using the route from Pakistan.
Government reaction aside, the worst thing that I noticed after this incident was how some people who claim to be"liberal"started drawing comparisons with suicide attacks that are carried out by extremist organizations in Pakistan by saying things like"where is the outrage when civilians are killed by Taliban the Baloch are killed by our own people."Whatever your opinions may be on other issues, there is no point in drawing comparisons with an attack that is clearly an act of aggression from NATO. Neither is there a need to compare whose suffering is greater. People should note that at this time even the"liberals"of the most warhungry nation in the world aka United States are also defending their side/troops, even if it means giving the most ridiculous arguments possible.
I think our"educated"class needs to realize that no matter what our disagreements are with the military establishment and its role in the war on terror, the fact remains that ourjawansare paying the ultimate price of their lives to defend our country. Therefore, no matter which side of the political spectrum you are on, it is almost impossible to doubt their integrity and bravery; not to mention the tears of their mothers, sisters and daughters.
On the other hand, concerning our government's promises of actions to be taken against the US, we should realize that it's not the first time that we have shown"such dismay

vanessa bruno, we are big talkers when it comes to the violation of our"sovereignty", but fall short when it comes time to take actions.
Why can't we ever assert ourselves with integrity especially when it's clear that we are the victim of aggression? The point is that when our own house is not in order, we ourselves make it easier for people from the outside to do what they want to us. When we don't care about our own people

Yes, we can curse the NATO for the loss of our soldiers, but who is responsible when we kill each other? It is high time that we see all Pakistani's as humans, irrespective of religion

If we continue like this, we are going to lose many more like Captain Usman (and the 23 others that lost their lives this weekend) whose sons and daughters will grow up to ask us the same dreaded question"Is this the country my father laid his life for?"
